Conventions are making a comeback, and out in Southern California, SDCC’s sister show, WonderCon is held this weekend. The spotlight panel on David F. Walker delved into the career of the writer with an added personal touch since his cousin and business partner, Sean Owolo, served as moderator.
It was an interesting discussion covering Walker’s original pursuit to be an artist at the Joe Kubert School of Cartoon and Graphic Art along with his foray into independent film. One of his earlier movies starred Ken Foree from the original Dawn of the Dead and as things come full circle, Walker and Owolo are speaking with the actor now for an upcoming project they are putting together.
His time on Big Two comics was also covered and how Power Man and Iron Fist led to his teamup with Sanford Greene and Chuck Brown on Bitter Root. What’s more interesting was how Naomi came about through a promise made while Brian Michael Bendis was gravely ill in the hospital.
Near the end of the talk, Walker plugged his current and future work. During WonderCon, the soft launch for the crowd funding of Imposter Syndrome has started. It contains a series of short comics he wrote primarily during the pandemic illustrated by different artists. You can find it currently on Zoop. If you happen to be attending the convention this weekend and you stop by his table (B-01) and show proof you supported the project, you’ll receive a free comic written and signed by the man himself.
For those who purchase a copy of Imposter Syndrome, it will contain a preview of his next graphic novel Bully, an epic graphic memoir also told through short stories. It is deeply personal and explores the time he was kicked out of the Kubert School amongst other events.
