Channel Surfing: Awesome TV picks for the week of 04/04/2022

Our Channel Surfing TV picks this week all involve animation.

Start off your television viewing for the month of April with our Channel Surfing TV picks. This week, we have three series that use animation. First, get into more hijinks while becoming an adult in Close Enough. Then Keef continues to gain a higher profile as an activist in the second season of Woke. Finally, Pinecone & Pony is a wholesome children’s book adaptation for the entire family.

Growing Pains

The family on Close Enough is far from conventional. There are the parents and their daughter but also the roommates who are their divorced best friends along with the next-door neighbor and her adopted son. Life can be difficult and they all might not be perfect but they are “close enough.”

In the third season, Josh and Emily continue to learn how to grow up without growing old as they raise little Candice. Though what they experience each episode can be mundane, things usually escalate into the most absurd situations. This time around, expect encounters with alien fitness cults, yacht-rock vampires, and silent film era bison.

All of season three of Close Enough will drop on Thursday, April 7, on HBO max.

Becoming an Art-ivist

Keith Knight is a well-known cartoonist who has won multiple awards including the Harvey and Inkpot Awards. He also serves as the inspiration of the main character in Woke. On the show, Keef is a young black man who tried to live a drama free life by keeping things light and avoiding anything controversial. That is until one day he has a traumatizing experience with a police officer and it alters his own perspective to the point where inanimate object begin to talk to him.

In the upcoming season, Keef receives a higher profile due to his previous actions and finds the fame to be overwhelming. As he becomes more socially active as a cartoonist, he finds that people start viewing him with a fine microscope analyzing everything from what he does and doesn’t do with his platform. Now he wrestles with the expectations others have of him while still being true to himself.

All eight episodes Woke season two will be released Friday, April 8, on Hulu.

Be Fearlessly You

Kate Beaton is a Canadian comic artist who is best known for her webcomic, Hark! A Vagrant. She also wrote and illustrated the award-winning children’s book, The Princess and the Pony. DreamWorks decided to adapt the story into an animated comedy.

We follows Princess Pinecone, a young warrior in training, and her BFF, Pony. As they set out on adventures, the pair help each other out. Soon they learn to challenge their expectations and bust out of their mold to see the endless possibilities the world has to offer.

Pinecone & Pony will be released Friday, April 8, on Apple TV+.
