Fantastic Five: The best comics of the week of May 11, 2022

It was a week of variety, as four publishers made it to the top 5 in our celebration of the best comics of the week.

Happy Friday, AIPT readers! Welcome back to another edition of Fantastic Five, where we look back at the week in comics and give special shoutout to the best comics of the week. It was a week of variety, as four publishers made it to the top 5. Let’s get right to ’em!

Eight Billion Genies #1

Eight Billion Genies #1 is a great start to a series that understands how to hook the reader. The series smartly opens with grounded, realistic characters so when the supernatural elements kick off it’s even more fantastical. Eight Billion Genies is never less than engaging, with strong characters to be absorbed in before the supernatural elements kick it all into another gear.

‘Eight Billion Genies’ #1 is highly engaging

Captain America: Symbol of Truth #1

Captain America: Symbol of Truth #1 has just about everything readers could want in a debut issue of a superhero book. There’s action, humor, a touch of romance, and a setup for a conflict that has stakes both on a personal level and an international one.

‘Captain America: Symbol of Truth’ #1 gets off to a soaring start

Moon Knight: Black, White & Blood #1

Moon Knight: Black, White & Blood #1 is another great addition to the anthology line of comics from Marvel. There are some instant hits here that are brilliant, creative, and downright fun. The consistency wavers, of course, but it’s an exhilarating Moon Knight experience.

‘Moon Knight: Black, White & Blood’ #1 is an exhilarating experience

The Sandman Universe: Nightmare Country #2

The Sandman Universe: Nightmare Country #2 is a near-perfect issue, although it relies on the first issue to truly reach that perfection. In many respects, Nightmare Country is beautiful in all its horrors as it explores what lies beneath blending the dreaming and waking life. This is must-read horror storytelling.

Sonic the Hedgehog: Imposter Syndrome #4

I really liked this issue, and this Imposter Syndrome as a whole. It really took very little to endear me to these new villain characters — they’ve been given such a great injection of charm and personality in their writing and designs that made me fall in love with them right away. Obviously the response from other fans has been great too, so I don’t need to tell everybody who worked on this mini that they did a great job. But they did do a great job, and this whole thing has me super pumped to read Sonic #50 and see this all culminate into an unforgettable showdown. Great art, great writing, great everything. Hats off to all of you that worked on this series.
