“Ivan Shavrin and an interconnecting Starward variant? A cosmic lightbulb burst apart in my head when I heard the news,” said writer Steve Orlando. “The world of Starward exists because of Ivan’s innovative, intensely creative work, so I couldn’t be more excited to see the Starward Sisters explored to live across this massive, multi-issue canvas. And as they jump off the cover of the book, inside the pages, the sisters will have to find a way to break out of that most all-encompassing of traps—reality itself!”

For more on Starward, don’t miss our interview with Steve Orlando on the AIPT Comics podcast.

This is the first in a series of interconnecting covers featuring the Seven Starward Sisters which will be available as variant covers starting with issue #2.

“Working on Heavy Metal’s Starward series has been a freeing and magical experience. It’s like Steve and I were put on a catapult, pulled, and released into free flight in any given direction we chose to go in. The process has been full of creativity and wild ideas,” said artist Ivan Shavrin. “We’ve had support at every step from Executive Editor Joseph Illidge, and complete mutual understanding. I’m proud of the work I’ve done with Steve, who I’ve admired since reading Undertow, and with Heavy Metal, who has nurtured this unique project.”

What’s Starward about?

Starward follows college student Stephanie Cohen, who is on a fast track to a medical degree, as decided by her parents. Stephanie was never consulted on choosing the path for her own life, so now she’s drowning in pre-med when she’d rather be studying classics, folklore, and mythology. But on the eve of her twentieth birthday, as Stephanie prepares to stare into her own personal summer abyss for yet another day, she gets a gift unlike any she could possibly expect. Now she must unite the mythical reincarnated Seven Starward Sisters to defeat the world-destroying villain Kaos and save the world!
