On Friday, James Hibberd at the Hollywood Reporter exclusively revealed that HBO is developing a new spinoff series featuring Kit Harrington as Jon Snow (or Aegon Targaryen if you want to get picky).
According to Hibberd’s report, the series will take place after the events in Game of Thrones‘ final episode. In case you’ve forgotten and/or blocked it from your memory, the series finale concluded with Jon Snow returning to exile beyond the wall to avoid a war between the North and the Unsullied. He was supposed to rejoin the Night’s Watch, but appeared to ride off with the Free Folk, instead.
So where does the story go from here?
At this point, it’s time to accept that George R.R. Martin is never going to finish the final two books in his A Song of Ice and Fire series. I’ll gladly eat three-eyed crow if I’m wrong, but I think most folks in their heart of hearts know we’ll be lucky to even see Winds of Winter get published.
With no finished source material for guidance, it’ll be interesting to see if HBO has whoever writes the show collaborate with Martin on the story. While the upcoming prequel series House of the Dragon is based on a book, a Jon Snow-centered sequel would be forging completely new narrative territory.
