‘Surviving the Cartel’ follows in the tradition ‘The Wire’

Television’s best kept secret.

Surviving the Cartel is the best show that no one knows about. The story follows three distinct characters who are looking to make dramatic changes in their lives. Alejandro Cardona (Gabriel Aguero) is to leave a CEO position in Silicon Valley to take over from his dad as the leader of a cartel in Mexico. This decision affects a former member of the Mexican Navy looking to get back to the United States and an El Paso detective.

The television show has found a loyal fanbase due to its great acting and storytelling. The ability to binge television shows is one of the best luxuries the streaming world has provided. The downside is that viewers will often not pay as much attention. Bingeworthy shows are often the same ones that are put on in the background. Surviving the Cartel is one of those shows. The problem is it packs in so much, that having it on while doing something else will cause important details to be missed.

Much like The Wire, the show has lots of characters and storylines. This can be intimidating at times and may be part of the reason the show has struggled to find a large audience. It is popular among people how have watched – there just are not that many of them. Part of this may be due to the fact that it is an independent production that is shown pay-per-view. Though the cast is a talented one – Francisco Denis from Netflix’s Narcos joined the second season – they are not necessarily household names.

None of this should take away from how well constructed the show is. The acting is top notch and each character is well developed. Surviving the Cartel is not without its violent moments, but it is more than just another show about organized crime. This is one of the rare shows that people should go out of their way to watch.
