If you’ve been watching Ms. Marvel on Disney+ you know the character has been changed in different ways from her comic book counterpart. Her powers are the most obvious, which are aided by a bangle and seem to be energy-based.
Spoilers ahead for Ms. Marvel Episode 6.
In the season finale of Ms. Marvel out today, it appears there’s another major change. Once finished, you might be asking yourself, “Is Ms. Marvel a mutant?”
The short answer is it’s not conclusive, but it’s close. Nobody says she’s an X-Man or anything, but her friend Bruno does say,
“Kamala, there’s something different in your genes. Like…like a mutation.”
If that isn’t a clue what is? Kamala shrugs it off replying, “Whatever it is, it’s just going to be another label.” Gotta love her attitude.

Whether or not it’s just a label, Marvel Studios knows what it’s doing. While she says this, music plays briefly that sounds very familiar. If you can’t place it, the credits give it away: it’s the X-Men ’97 theme composed by Haim Saban and Shuki Levy.

The fact that in the comics, Ms. Marvel possesses latent Inhuman lineage activated by a Terrigen Bomb appears to be ignored.
Those details, paired with the obvious changes to the character for the MCU lead me to believe Ms. Marvel is the first named mutant in the MCU. No doubt she isn’t the first mutant in the universe, but what does this mean for the future of the X-Men being integrated into the MCU?
Are you excited that Kamala isn’t an Inhuman, but a mutant? Let us know in the comments!
