‘Do a Powerbomb’ #2 makes the hot tag

Lona gets an offer she can’t refuse.

As an instant fan of the first issue, I couldn’t wait to get my hands on Image Comics’ Do a Powerbomb #2, and boy, it didn’t disappoint. The story picks up right from the climactic ending of Do a Powerbomb #1, where we saw Lona Steelrose brought to another dimension and given the proposal of a lifetime by an untrustworthy-looking wizard named Willard Necroton. Willard offers two things Lona Steelrose wants more than anything else: a chance to prove that she can be a great wrestler, and a way to bring her mom back from the dead. All she has to do is win Willard’s Deathlyfe Tag Team Tournament — if she can find a partner.

The first half of Do a Powerbomb #2 is a backstory about Willard Necroton, while the rest of the book gives us the no-holds-barred chair shots and off-the-top rope wrestling shenanigans readers would expect. But amidst all that, Daniel Warren Johnson continues to deliver a compelling story about sacrifice, redemption, and determination. In addition, the writing continues to be consistent throughout, moving the story forward and adding some humorous moments like characters laughing at the notion of professional wrestling being fake.

Regarding the artwork, Johnson adds even more hard-hitting emotions and action than in the first book. You can feel the explosiveness of his pencil work on each page, especially during the in-ring fights. In addition, Johnson makes excellent use of splash pages in this issue, with one delivering a jaw-dropping moment that changes the complexity of the storyline.

Do a Powerbomb #2 accomplishes a lot in terms of story. What makes it an incredible comic is that it’s not a tale about just winning and losing fights, but the battles we continue to fight outside the ring. The fights themselves are intense and downright satisfying. This is a comic you should be reading.
