On Monday, Amazon announced that the film adaptation of Grady Hendrix’s acclaimed novel My Best Friend’s Exorcism will debut exclusively on their Prime Video streaming service. We’ve known about Amazon Studios being behind this one for a while, but we now have an official release date of September 30.
The movie will be directed by Damon Thomas (Killing Eve) based on a script from writer/actress Jenna Lamia (Good Girls). It stars Elsie Fisher (Eight Grade) and Amiah Miller (Lights Out) in the main roles along with Christopher Lowell, Cathy Ang, Rachel Ogechi, and Cynthia Evans.
If you read the title or look at that gorgeous cover and think this movie’s not for you, I get it. I thought the same thing when Goodreads kept recommending it to me based on my horror-loving preferences. After finally giving in, however, it took me less than two days to finish what is still one of my favorite horror novels of all time.
It’s a bit hard to explain how Hendrix masterfully balances a tone that’s equal parts funny, poignant, and terrifying, but I gave it a shot in my review of the novel from a few years ago:
Mix a glass of ‘Sixteen Candles’ and ‘Mean Girls,’ spike it with two shots of ‘The Exorcist’ and ‘The Last Exorcism,’ and you get ‘My Best Friend’s Exorcism.’
If the film adaptation stays close to the book’s superb narrative, then streaming it on September 30 will be a perfect way to kick off the Halloween season.
