‘Wolverine One:12 Deluxe Steel Box Edition’ gets the details right

It’s hard to imagine what Mezco could have added or done differently with this Wolverine action figure. It’s just that good.

Mezco Toys is no stranger when it comes to making Wolverine action figures. There’s a brown costume version, the Old Man Logan version we reviewed at AIPT, and now a deluxe steel box yellow costume version. Currently a wait-list item, the Wolverine deluxe steel box edition is now shipping worldwide. Let’s take a look at this pricey but impressive deluxe edition.

Like with any X-Men action figure, the devil is in the details. In Mezco’s style of One:12 Collective action figures, how the cloth costume holds up. Of course for some, the star of this steel box edition is the light-up Sentinel!

Listen to the latest episode of our weekly comics podcast!

The Sentinel is impressive with great battle-damage details and a light-up function. Cleverly, Mezco made it so you can turn the Sentinel on from the back but also toggle the light function with a red button on its collar. Many action figures require you to flip the switch on the back, making the light feature much more functional. The detailing, paint job, and most importantly, the eight holes available to position Wolverine all over this figure are impressive. There’s nothing I’d change on this Sentinel, which is a glorified stand for Wolverine (or any action figure for that matter) to stand on.

As for everything else, it’s quite good. The entire package is $155, which is certainly way above what most spend on Marvel Legends figures, but Mezco has thought of everything. Starting with the steel box, it’s a super fun way to package everything. Fans will likely end up using it to hold something else, but it’s sturdy and has some great art on every side.

The action figure is tightly packaged with plastic covering every head to ensure there’s no wear on the figure in transit. Wolverine and all his accessories come in one layer, with the Sentinel in the bottom layer. As usual for Mezco, there’s a handy bag to hold all the accessories and a stand.

Unpacking everything, you get a lot of options as far as heads and hands. All told, there are eight heads, twelve hands, and plenty of effects for claw-slashing fun.

Many fans will want to know about the X-slash effect, which has holes for Wolverine’s claws to fit through. It’s rather snug and fairly easy to get the X-slash effect to hold.

I’m really happy with how many heads there are and how many looks you have to change the overall feel of the figure. It comes with two classic original costume heads–one sneering and one serious–and two unmasked heads with clean and wild hair. The unmasked heads also have a mask folded back to allow for a third option. Then you get three heads with the classic mask with a scream, serious, and gritted teeth look. Rounding out the heads is an Albert cyborg-damaged head. Nice touch.

The paint job on these heads is also immaculate, down to the perfectly colored blue eyes. Little details like the wrinkles in the forehead on the Wolverine scream head are pitch perfect.

Regarding the action figure, the costume on the body and legs is cloth, but it’s so tight on the figure it’s hardly noticeable. Mezco has mastered this aspect – some previous Mezco figures felt more like dolls in the hand. That’s not the case with this Wolverine. The stitching on the back is noticeable but shouldn’t be a dealbreaker for most.

Details on the boots, gloves, and neck are well done too. Metal rivets can have great details making it stand out as a primo figure. The arms have painted on arm hair which looks good. There’s also a second red belt option with an extra belt buckle to change the look.

The action figure has 30 points of articulation, including one for each shoulder pad. That’s a nice feature since moving the arms requires the pads to shift a bit as needed. He’s easy to pose as well as switch out hands and heads.

If the price point didn’t make it obvious, this toy isn’t for little kids. The pointy ends of Wolverine’s mask are quite sharp, for instance, and the slash effects aren’t dull by any means either. I doubt anyone would buy this for their kids, but if you think you might, be sure they’re old enough to handle it with care, or they might poke themselves.

Wolverine - Deluxe Steel Box Edition review

It’s hard to imagine what Mezco could have added or done differently with this Wolverine action figure. It’s just that good. The only thing stopping everyone from getting it is likely the $155 price tag, which is steep, but when you factor in the excellent packaging and Sentinel, it’s an easy recommendation. At a glance, the figure may look ordinary, but when you look closer at the details in the heads, Sentinel, and body, it’s one of the best Wolverine action figures you could purchase.

Fantastic details in the heads, Sentinel, and body of the figure
Great packaging and steel box
The light feature on the Sentinel is great, and allows you to turn it off and on without having to flip it over
The stitching on the back isn't as clean as the rest of the figure
Sharp edges make this a no-no for young kids

Great
