On Thursday, Etan Vlessing of The Hollywood Reporter revealed that Brendan Gleeson has been cast in Todd Phillips’ upcoming musical sequel to 2019’s Joker.
While news of Lady Gaga joining the film’s cast still has folks buzzing (and for good reason), the addition to Gleeson is very big news as well. The award-winning Irish actor has portrayed a number of notable roles. Many of our readers will no doubt recognize him as Alastor “Mad-Eye” Moody from the Harry Potter Films. As for me, his portrayal of Bill Hodges in Mr. Mercedes (a brilliant adaptation of one of Stephen King’s best book series) is still my favorite.
Nothing has been revealed about Gleeson’s role yet, although there’s likely one question everyone has at this point: Do we get to hear him sing?
It wouldn’t be a surprise if he did. Gleeson is an accomplished musician who can throw down a sweet tune on the mandolin and or the fiddle. He also has a really nice voice. Don’t believe me? Check out this clip of him crooning “The Unfortunate Lad” from 2018’s The Ballad of Buster Scruggs.
Joker 2 (tentatively titled Joker: Folie à Deux) is set to premiere on October 4, 2024.
