The main group of ensigns on Star Trek: Lower Decks are always getting into zany adventures each episode. Of course, all their shenanigans result in entertainment for us, but how does the rest of Star Fleet see them? We find out what kind of reputation they have in “Mining the Mind’s Mines.”
Mariner, Boimler, and Rutherford are tasked with removing odd spheres that can exploit a person’s greatest desire and turn them into stone. Meanwhile, another group of ensigns working close by are openly hostile and spark a heated competition on who can finish their task first. It appears no one likes our gang because they screw around too much and don’t follow orders.
When the situation gets out of hand with the orbs, because you know it will, our ensigns prove how heroic and level headed they can be. Despite saving the day, it’s intriguing to see how self-conscious they are amongst their peers. It’s no surprise Mariner and company actually live up to their reputations since we discover the U.S.S. Cerritos is considered the Enterprise of support ships.
The use of the orbs provides a convenient means to dive into the psyche of the characters of Lower Decks. Some of it us played for gags such as Rutherford’s nerdy crush on Dr. Leah Brahms. The most insightful reveals, if you can look past the chaos, deal with Mariner. She is actually in a happy relationship; with who might surprise you. However, seeing her fears, you don’t know how long it will last. Still, it is nice to see more of someone who keeps her inner self so guarded.
You can tell the animators and writers had a lot of fun on the episode, particularly in creating the twisted fears come to life. There are some conventional horrors with a Star Trek twist from Borg snakes to freaky Klingon clowns.
Elsewhere, Tendi begins her first day as a science officer and she’s a little bit disappointed that Dr. Migleemo is her advisor. Though she struggles with her duties, she proves why she’s part of the lauded ensigns of the Cerritos through her perseverance and acuity. In a sentimental nod, she realizes who her real mentor is, even if they no longer work together.
This week’s episode playfully utilizes the character’s fears and desires for both comedic effect and a deeper dive into their psyche.
