When the beautiful, medium weight engine-building board game Wingspan took the world by storm in 2019, it was immediately obvious that first-time designer Elizabeth Hargrave was the real deal. Spurred by her love of nature, Hargrave followed that up in 2020 with Mariposas, which allows players to help guide the migration of monarch butterflies.
Now, with The Fox Experiment, to be published by Pandasaurus Games and on Kickstarter through this Friday, Hargrave is showcasing a fascinating topic you may have never heard about. For over 60 years, Russian scientists have been selectively breeding silver foxes in a real-time domestication exercise. And you can simulate it!
The Fox Experiment wondefully shows the interplay between genetics and the expression of traits through dice-rolling, drafting, and of course, recording data! Check out the video above to see Elizabeth talk all about it with Evan Bernstein of The Skeptics’ Guide to the Universe and Which Game First podcasts.
And see the board and components below! The Fox Experiment is almost 1,000% funded on Kickstarter, but there’s still time to lock in your pledge and help unlock a couple more stretch goals. Look at all those full-color fox meeples!
