NYCC 2022: DC dives into the multiverse at New York Comic Con

DC’s Lazarus Planet erupts in 2023!

Creators Mahmud Asrar, Bernard Chang, Dan Mora, Matthew Rosenberg, and Stephanie Williams took the stage at NYCC today. Executive editor Dan Abernathy moderated a panel where the group discussed their current work, teased future projects, and announced DC’s next must-read event.

Starting with the biggest announcement, Lazarus Planet spins out of Mark Waid and Mahmud Asrar’s Batman vs. Robin series. It will result in “chaos across the DC universe” as people worldwide develop new powers. The event will have a murderer’s row of talent on board as Riccardo Federici, Gene Luen Yang, Billy Tan, Nicole Maines, Skylar Patridge, Francis Manapul, Dan Watters, Phillip Kennedy Johnson, and Josie Campbell all join Waid in telling the story. It’ll start in January when Lazarus Planet: Alpha releases 1/10.

The creators also got to spotlight their current and upcoming projects. Williams described developing Nubia ahead of Nubia and the Justice League #1 and making her not just “the black Diana, the black Wonder Woman,” but a well-rounded character in her own right. She gushed over Amancay Nahuelpan and Alitha Martinez’s artwork in the book, loving Nubia’s outfits and saying Nubia can “rip the runway, or rip someone’s throat out.”

She also teased a Colonel Future holiday story featuring Superman and Wonder Woman. Colonel Future is a little-known DC character who can see the future but is “really bad at interpreting it.”

Matthew Rosenberg talked about his upcoming WILDC.A.T.S. series, describing it as an “explosive, action-packed debut of a new team that… no one knows whether they’re the good guys or the bad guys.” The Court of Owls will be the main antagonists of the first arc, and you can check out the series when issue #1 hits comics stands next month.
