Jameela Jamil on her ‘Star Trek: Prodigy’ character: ‘I don’t think there’s anyone quite like my character in the franchise’

New episodes of Star Trek: Prodigy return on October 27th.

Jameela Jamil (The Good Place, She-Hulk, DC League of Super-Pets) is joining the cast of Star Trek: Prodigy in the back half of Season 1. Her character, Ensign Asencia, appears to be an overachiever but unassuming in almost all of the first five episodes for which Paramount provided screeners. Asencia serves under the real Vice Admiral Kathryn Janeway. She seems to be the fourth lead character on a Trek series to belong to the Trill species after Jadzia Dax, Ezri  Dax, and Gray Tal. Then at the end of Episode 15, everything we thought we knew about her is upended as we learn Ensign Asencia is more involved in the story of the USS Protostar than we knew.

“I don’t think there’s anyone quite like my character in the franchise so far,” Jamil told me when I caught up with her at New York Comic Con on Saturday. “And if you’ve seen more of the show than I think you have, then maybe you understand that.”

“I think my character gets to do all the fun things. I feel very satisfied with the character. I got to play with kind of parts of my brain that I haven’t been able to play with on any projects I’ve ever done before.”

Another nugget about the upcoming episodes came when I sat down with Kate Mulgrew. “There are several iterations of Janeway, and some of them are dark and unexpected, and then the journey takes a harrowing turn,” Mulgrew teased.

And during the Star Trek: Prodigy panel, we learned of several returning legacy characters from Star Trek: The Next Generation, including Billy Campbell’s rogue Thadiun Okana and Ronny Cox’s Captain Edward Jellico.
