NYCC 2022: ‘Titans’ cast teases Superboy’s two dads, Beast Boy’s classic costume, and magical villains

If season three of DC’s Titans felt more heavily focused on Batman’s side of the DC Universe — with its “Death in the Family” and “Red Hood” storylines as well as Gotham setting and villain — then season four, according to its cast, leans more towards Superboy and Beast Boy.

Several of the stars from DC’s Titans came to New York Comic Con on Sunday to promote the upcoming season four. A clip that premiered at the panel gives us our first look at Titus Welliver’s Lex Luthor, but several of the actors also hinted at a possible introduction to Superman on the show. “Now we get to finally explore those two influencers, Superman and Lex Luthor, and how they coalesce into this one person,” Joshua Orpin (Connor Kent aka “Superboy”) said of his character’s journey this season.

If Superman does turn up this season, don’t necessarily expect it right away though. “Season four kicks off with Connor Kent wants to meet his father, and he doesn’t get to meet the father he wants to meet,” said Brenton Thwaites (Dick Grayson aka “Nightwing”). “He gets the other one.”

But Lex Luthor will not be the primary villain of season four. Joseph Morgan (The Vampire Diaries) and Franka Potente (Run Lola Run, The Bourne Identity) will play Brother Blood and Mother Mayhem, respectively. Comic-Con attendees were treated to another clip seeing Mother Mayhem in action:

The other big news to come out of the Titans panel, visible in the above clip, is Beast Boy’s classic costume, which no one was more thrilled about than Ryan Potter (Gar aka “Beast Boy”) himself. Potter, a huge fan of the comics, told the attendees of the panel that, as much as he likes the comfort of Gar’s street clothes, he wanted the supersuit.

The costume designer showed him two color options:  the purple that Beast Boy is most associated with and red. “The Teen Titans fan in me wanted that purple, but we tonally have set the Wolfman/Perez Era into the modern age, and the red and white looks phenomenal,” Potter said. “And I wanted to make sure the tone remains. Just know we did think about it for those Teen Titans-heads here, but the red and white look amazing.”

Titans season four begins November 3rd on HBO Max.
