‘Stargirl: The Lost Children’ #1 review

Stargirl returns as part of The New Golden Age to help find the missing sidekicks, even if they didn’t exist.

It’s a fascinating era for Golden Age adventure at DC Comics. There is so much happening with heroes returning from publishing limbo and being discovered, and I have been loving this embrace of legacy at DC. I’ve seen fans get upset when a legacy comes along and replaces their favorite version, as it is a tough pill to swallow, but right now, I feel like across publishers, we’re in an era where we can have two heroes called Superman or Spider-Man, which is exciting! With the start of this miniseries, get ready to work on the mystery of the missing sidekicks, discover who the Childminder is, and some old-fashioned action to entertain.

This issue alone is a fun time, but if you want to enhance your experience, I recommend reading the Stargirl Spring Break Special and The New Golden Age #1 as they lead into this series. Geoff Johns does a great job of catching you up with this issue without it being repetitive for readers who have been following along. I enjoy the friendship that he is building with Stargirl and Red Arrow. While that is happening, we also get a sense of danger from their company as it is causing Stargirl to get behind with her studies and chores at home; it’s perfect teen drama. It isn’t played out as parents getting upset about their daughter’s use of time; it is more the worry that she will lose Courtney Whitmore along the way. Fans of the Stargirl TV show will recognize this part of the story.

Todd Nauck and Matt Herms bring art and color, respectively, to this issue. Todd Nauck’s art is such a treat to the eye. Plus, it plays to his handling of younger characters, as he has proven with the Young Justice series. Todd can capture the wide-eyed innocence of a more youthful hero while also giving that devil-may-care attitude to them for expression while they are in serious situations. Todd also fills his pages with items, so be sure to inspect the backgrounds to discover some hidden Easter eggs. I’ll give you one: on the page where Courtney starts her narration, you can see a shout-out on the movie theater marquee to “Young Just Us.”

The opening action sequence of this issue featuring TNT and Dan the Dyna-Mite is so much fun and helps to prove that a modern comic could make the Golden Age fun. Geoff Johns and Todd Nauck treat these characters with so much respect that they don’t come off with a sense of goofy gimmicks but instead are heroes who laid it all on the line and used their smarts to make tools work for their adventures. It brings back that sense of wonder and imagination.

Geoff Johns and Todd Nauck are back with mystery and adventure as we look for The Lost Children. They are using elements from all across the DCU, including newly discovered ones, to make a fun, entertaining miniseries that rejuvenates the Golden Age.
