Fantastic Five: The best comics of the week of November 23, 2022

Welcome to a special Black Friday edition of our celebration of the best comics of the week!

Welcome to a special Black Friday edition of Fantastic Five, where we give props to the best comics of the week! Thanksgiving didn’t slow down publishers here in the United States, as we still had a whole slew of great comics to weed through before settling on the very best of the best. Wake up from your turkey comas, and before you brave the Black Friday crowds, give thanks for excellent comic books like these coming out every week:

#5: Tim Drake: Robin #3

Fantastic Five: The best comics of the week of November 23, 2022

Listen to the latest episode of our weekly comics podcast!

Tim Drake: Robin #3 is a self-contained story driven by enigmas that would even make the Riddler scratch his chin. Throughout the story, Fitzmartin and Rossmo continue to create one of the most underrated books in DC right now. Tim’s life couldn’t be more interesting, and readers can jump into this arc with little prior knowledge. This continues to be a captivating series worth reading for anyone curious about what the next step in Tim Drake’s life is.

#4: Mindset #5

Fantastic Five: The best comics of the week of November 23, 2022

The twist at the end of Mindset #5 alone makes this comic great. It completely changes all that has come before, turning everything on its head. How good this twist – and maybe the entire series – actually is will all come down to how Zach Kaplan, John J. Pearson, Jimmy Savage and Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou wrap everything up in Mindset #6. So, once again, as with all the previous issues, I can’t wait for the next issue – the final issue – to arrive.

#3: Doctor Strange: Fall Sunrise #1

Fantastic Five: The best comics of the week of November 23, 2022

You need to read Doctor Strange: Fall Sunrise with eyes wide open, willing to accept what you get isn’t hand-feeding you answers nor delivering a conventional-style story. This is an artistic masterpiece with a vision that’s hard to deny or put down. Could the story used a bit more cohesion to make sense of it all? Probably, but then maybe your experience would be disrupted since this is more about the unknowable weirdness of Doctor Strange’s daily mission. Tradd Moore’s work here is brilliantly original and gloriously dreamlike. It’s a delight.

#2: Star Wars: Yoda #1

Fantastic Five: The best comics of the week of November 23, 2022

Star Wars: Yoda #1 is a compelling start to a new series exploring Yoda as a character. As the starting issue, it’s fun to see Yoda experience a bit of joy while showing off his power and impressive fighting prowess. Throw in a bit of a mystery in his later years, and there’s plenty here for casual fans and hardcore fans to love.

#1: Miracleman by Gaiman & Buckingham: The Silver Age #2

Fantastic Five: The best comics of the week of November 23, 2022

Significant changes have happened to the Miracle Family, and the new bonds will be tested as moves are made. Young Miracleman will have his newly restored life turned upside down, which was a major cliffhanger for fans of Miracleman back in 1993. Before we get the new material, take time to appreciate this remaster of a significant issue.
