The Flash is getting his own event this year and it starts today in The Flash #790. Titled “The One-Minute War“, Barry Allen, Wally West, and their amazing friends and family are all getting thrust into a battle of the ages. Given how strong Jeremy Adams’ run on the series has been leaning into the familial aspect of Flash, we’re in for a ride that’ll be well worth checking out.
The Flash #790 opens with a group called the Fraction that has come to conquer, and it seems only those connected to the speed force have noticed time has stood still. They’re flying a ship directly into Earth that looks like a giant arrow, and they certainly mean harm. Cut to Wally and Linda hosting a barbecue with a slew of superheroes and family. Similar to big blockbusters like Independence Day, they see something in the sky, and it’s not good.
As the issue progresses, Adams and artist Roger Cruz check in with key characters, many of whom are witnessing the same alien attack in real time. It’s made clear some heroes stop in time while Flash-centric characters keep moving. A simple touch-down of a spaceship is frightening, but things get far worse when we see what it does once it hits the planet. It’s a tragic scene right out of a disaster movie, creating chaos and confusion. Our heroes are all caught off guard here, and those that remain will need to find each other to figure out what is happening and how to stop the Fraction.

War is coming.

As first issues go, this is the impetus that will set our heroes in motion to stop the threat. As far as who the Fraction are or what they are after…to be continued, it seems. That leaves the threat of the enemy as a big question mark, but as an ensemble series, it’s well done how the story checks in with so many characters from time to time. We will, however, get a full rundown on them in The Flash: One-Minute War one-shot special coming out later this month.
Cruz’s style suits the general fun and family vibe of this series. When things go to hell, the explosion is epic, colored well by Luis Guerrero. Cruz is very good at getting the characters right; each one looks unique and consistent. I can’t say the Fraction spaceship looks all that impressive–it’s like a giant top, flat on all sides–but the epic nature of it crashing into Earth looks good.
The Flash #790 sets in motion an event that’ll require a ton of Flash-centric heroes to band together, and this first issue establishes them all well. The attack by the enemy is epic, and while we know very little at this point, it’s made very clear the Flash family is facing off against a threat that’ll require all of their efforts to stop.
