Last year was a fantastic year for video games, with releases like Elden Ring and God of War Ragnarök collecting award after award. 2023 looks to continue the trend of releasing excellent games week after week, and even the doldrums of January will see some day-one purchases come out.
Let’s check out what video games are hitting storefronts this month.
Monster Hunter Rise (1/20)
Just like last January, the year starts off with 2021’s critically acclaimed Monster Hunter Rise going multiplatform. Rise releases on PlayStation and Xbox consoles this week. It’ll also be available on Game Pass at launch and will support cross-progression and cross-play between PC and Xbox or between PlayStation consoles. Sunbreak, the DLC expansion released last summer, will release for PlayStation and Xbox later in 2023. Rise will support 4K resolution, 60 FPS, and 3D audio for the PS5, Xbox Series X, and PC versions.
Colossal Cave (1/19)
The seminal 1970s text-based adventure game Colossal Cave Adventure is getting remade and updated for a 21st century gaming audience. Developed by renowned game makers Ken and Roberta Williams, Colossal Cave will be a “reimagining” of the original game for VR, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, PC, and Nintendo Switch. The premise is simple — players will explore a 3D cave in search of loot while fighting off various enemies and animals.
Fire Emblem Engage (1/20)
The next major entry in the Fire Emblem series is just about here. Engage will bring back characters from previous games in the form of allies who can be summoned during battle. They’ll help you become the Divine Dragon and save the continent of Elyos via the turn-based combat the series is known for. An expansion pass for Engage will release later in the year and bring even more past characters to the game.
