It’s Friday, and among other things, that means it’s time to look back a few days and celebrate the very best comics of the week! This week, we have four different publishers represented, and two books received perfect 10s. Let’s start the countdown!

#5: Immortal X-Men #10

Fantastic Five: The best comics of the week of January 18, 2023

Listen to the latest episode of our weekly comics podcast!

Immortal X-Men #10 will make you think about Xavier’s point of view, however warped, and commiserate with him. That’s a special thing, as it’s rare to feel for a shut-away hero like Xavier. For Mr. Sinister, the slightest edge is the greatest advantage, and this issue proves he may be the most dangerous mutant villain ever due to who has taken over when paired with his tainted point of view.

#4: Batgirls #14

Fantastic Five: The best comics of the week of January 18, 2023

Cass and Stephanie have a very engaging dynamic as Batgirls, and it’s been the strength of the series to see them working together. It’s a testament to Cloonan, Conrad, and Case’s power as creators to remove part of the equation and still make one of the series’ best issues. Art, colors, lettering, and writing are firing on all cylinders in Batgirls #14 as the creative team proves that sometimes less is more.

#3: White Savior #1

Fantastic Five: The best comics of the week of January 18, 2023

White Savior #1 explodes one of Hollywood’s most insidious and insulting tropes rooted in the glorification of the colonial past. Working to decolonize The Hero’s Journey isn’t only the right thing to do – in the hands of Eric Nguyen and Scott Burman, it’s absurdly fun.

#1: Sonic the Hedgehog: Scrapnik Island #4

Fantastic Five: The best comics of the week of January 18, 2023

The fan service is icing on that layered cake of great storytelling and art, and my hat is off to the team who put this together. I’m shocked a book like this exists at all for all its deep cuts and profound love for Sonic’s history, but I’m glad it does. It’s worth every penny, so please show your support.
