‘DCeased: War of the Undead Gods’ #6 review

The situation is dire for our heroes as they face Undead Gods and Fear Lanterns, but can one person turn the tide?

The path to issue #6 of DCeased: War of the Undead Gods has been challenging for the heroes as this creative team of Tom Taylor, Trevor Hairsine, Andy Lanning, and Rain Beredo have crafted an onslaught of terror. It’s bad enough that the undead were tearing apart a planet. Now, the heroes face undead gods with Yellow Lantern rings going for the galaxy. Yet all is not lost; as seen from this preview, a bit of hope might come in to help save the day. Brace yourself, as your emotions will go through quite the test with the losses and gains inside.

I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again: Tom Taylor gets characters. He crafts a perfect voice for their mannerisms and will get a great reaction from readers. We’ve seen Taylor work with Lobo before in Injustice, and those scenes were hilarious and memorable for how true they were to the character. Granted, some might say this plays like Rocket Raccoon’s response in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 1, but if you’ve read enough of Lobo, you’ll know the character’s avarice is that great. As for the character in this series, I’m glad to see him come to the front, but it will only play out as it does in this preview, so Lobo is still a bit of a wildcard for what is to come.

That intro with Lobo is just the tip of the iceberg in this issue. As you can see with Superman, we are thrust out to space to witness mass destruction as the fight between the Spectre and Mister Mxyzptlk rages on. This scene is an excellent area for the entire creative team to showcase their skills and collaboration. Tom Taylor’s words are perfect as our mysterious narrator elaborates on the scope of this battle created by Trevor Hairsine’s pencils. There is no wasted movement in this intense and brutal fight – Hairsine has the two characters demolish each other. Andy Lanning and Rain Beredo come in to finish with inks and colors that add even more depth to how dark and bloody this fight is. The art team crafts a hellish, undead Mister Mxyzptlk that will create some nightmares.

I’m trying not to get too “spoilery” for the issue’s contents, but I will say fans of Alfred Pennyworth will be very surprised as he goes through a whirlwind of emotions for the last part of the book. I trust in Tom Taylor, and we will get a fantastic story when it comes to Alfred. We’ve seen how Taylor handles Alfred in Nightwing and Injustice, which have showcased Alfred’s love of family. As I was reading the issue, there was a moment with a character’s death that didn’t make sense, but when you see what Taylor is doing with the outcome, it becomes worth a chance. One man’s vengeance might be enough to help turn the tide in this great issue.

This is an issue you won’t want to miss! If you’re an Alfred fan, brace yourself because his suffering isn’t over yet. How can a man survive in a world with undead gods and fear lanterns? Get this issue and be astounded!
