Fantastic Five: The best comics of the week of March 3, 2023

Get ready for the weekend with a look back at the very best comics of the week.

We made it, weekend True Believers: It’s Friday! In addition to the weekend, that means it’s time to look back at the five best comics of the week in a column we call Fantastic Five. This week was another one split between the Big Two – let’s take a look!

#5: Cosmic Ghost Rider #1

Fantastic Five: The best comics of the week of March 3, 2023

I’m ready for more Cosmic Ghost Rider, and given the pieces put in place, Cabal and Phillips have a surefire hit on their hands here. While the main story is a bit slow to the punch, the twist is compelling, and it’ll be interesting to see how this future Frank Castle continues to evolve and grow.

#4: Venom #17

Fantastic Five: The best comics of the week of March 3, 2023

Things get stranger for Eddie Brock in Venom #17 in an exciting start to another chapter in his journey of discovery. He’s the King in Black, yet stuck in what seems like a prison of time. This issue feels like the start of some real answers and growth for Venom in an era where Venom growing and evolving has become the exciting norm.

#3: Spider-Gwen: Shadow Clones #1

Fantastic Five: The best comics of the week of March 3, 2023

Emily Kim understands Gwen and has already given us intriguing new characters that I can’t wait to see more of as the series continues. Kei Zama’s art and Triona Farrel’s art and colors give life to the story in a brilliant way that makes every page a visual feast. This issue has set up what will surely become one of Spider-Gwen’s most memorable series and leaves me counting down the days until the next issue.

#2: Tim Drake: Robin #6

Fantastic Five: The best comics of the week of March 3, 2023

Tim Drake: Robin #6 is a perfect conclusion to the first arc of the series. With many questions answered, and some raised, the issue finds a way to tie everything together. Although the primary focus was the solving of a ongoing murder mystery in the Marina, the issue also brings deeper attention to Tim’s relationship with Bernard. In a series that has thus far focused a bit on identity, there seems to be an indicator that to find some inner peace for Tim, it’s going to take some opening up.

#1: Detective Comics #1069

Fantastic Five: The best comics of the week of March 3, 2023

Detective Comics #1069 is an exceptional chapter in Ram V’s run on the series. The operatic themes are still present, especially in the opening, while there is an interesting commentary on Gotham, Batman, and more throughout. Add in the incredibly well-done first chapter in a three-part backup story, and you have an all-time great issue of Detective Comics. Detective Comics is a series that has something to say, and does so in a vivid and rich new way.
