There are few things as satisfying to watch as good documentary. They can be shocking, funny, exciting, and disgusting. The flood of true crime documentaries have overshadowed the fact there are plenty of other fascinating stories to be told. SXSW has an interesting slate of docs playing that should be at the top of everyone’s list.
Another Body
As technology advances, it makes all of our lives easier. It also brings added levels of fear. Dealing in real life horror, this documentary dives into the new age threat of deepfake porn. The doc centers on a college student who finds deepfake pornography of herself circulating online and her search for justice.
Black Barbie
Barbie has been a part of American culture for decades. What started as a fashion doll led to animated shows, video games, comic books, and an upcoming live action movie. This documentary tells the story of the first Black Barbie beginning with a simple question, “Why not make a Barbie that looks like me?”
Satan Wants You
Anybody who grew up during the 1980s will remember the Satanic Panic. Everything from music to cartoons to movies seemed to have some kind of connection to the Devil. Satan Wants You is a documentary that looks at how a psychiatrist, daytime television, and the Catholic Church all worked together to create a moral panic. The perfect companion piece to Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves.
Who I Am Not
Who I Am Not is a documentary feature making its North American premiere at this year’s SXSW. A South African beauty queen has a crisis of identity when she finds out that she is intersex. An intersex activist, Dimakatso Sebidi, is the only person who can help her find the answer to the question of where intersex people fit in a binary world.
