Rocksteady’s Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League has been delayed later into 2023, according to Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier. This news comes a couple weeks after the game was shown off during Sony’s PlayStation State of Play where it was met with a less-than-stellar reception. While Schreier’s report doesn’t drawn a direct line between the negative fan and critical reception, one could reasonably assume that it played some part in the delay. Schreier explained on Twitter that the delay is more for polishing and any sort of reworking of core gameplay elements would cause a much more extensive delay.
Live service elements are prevalent in Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, which is partially what caused fans to react so harshly to its demonstration last month. Kill the Justice League would require a constant online connection (even when playing in single-player mode) and includes a battle pass for unlocking cosmetics, a marketplace for purchasing in-game cosmetics, and far too many currencies. Presumably these elements, in some form or another, will still be in the final game.
Kill the Justice League will see players, well, attempt to kill the Justice League, who are being mind-controlled by Brainiac. Harley Quinn, Captain Boomerang, King Shark, and Deadshot will be playable characters, and the game can be experienced solo or with friends.
Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League was revealed back in August 2020 with a 2022 launch window before getting hit with its first delay. I wish I could say you get your DC gaming fix in by playing Gotham Knights while you wait, but I don’t see anyone recommending that game any time soon.
For what it's worth, a delay like this is mainly for polish, not to overhaul the core gameplay that caused the backlash. Suicide Squad started off as a Game as a Service and will remain one short of a complete reboot, which would require a much longer delay
