Channel Surfing: Awesome TV picks for the week of 03/27/2023

Our Channel Surfing TV picks include two novel adaptations and fan favorite comic series.

Close out your March viewing with our latest Channel Surfing TV picks. A small town gets turned upside down in The Big Door Prize. Get ready to say good bye to Riverdale as it begins its final season. Then, the world hierarchy begins to change in The Power.

Ready for a Life Change?

The Big Door Prize is based off of the novel of the same name written by M.O. Walsh. It is about a small town that is forever changed when a mysterious machine suddenly appears in a shop. This machine promises to show whoever uses it their true life potential. Many residents become inspired by what they learn and drastically change their lives.

The series is developed by David West Read, who is best known for his work on Schitt’s Creek. It stars Chris O’Dowd, Gabrielle Dennis, Ally Maki, and Josh Segarra. O’Dowd’s Rusty Hubbard seems to be the only one in the town that is resisting the power of the machine, but in the trailer, maybe he eventually buys into the hype.

The first three episodes of The Big Door Prize will be released Wednesday, March 29, on Apple TV+.

We Need to Get Back to the Future

Riverdale has been this modern and edgy take on the bubblegum characters of Archie Comics. As we enter the final season of the show, it might still retain that feel, but the setting literally goes back to the past.

After successfully destroying the comet that threatened Riverdale, a drastic side effect was that the whole city was transported to the year 1955 and the gang revert back to being teenagers. However, Jughead is the only one who remembers what really happened. Some, like Archie, might not want to go back since he’s settled in and ready to be wed to Cheryl. Can the group survive the era and return to the present? We’ll have to watch and see.

The season seven premiere of Riverdale airs Wednesday, March 29, on The CW.

Girl Power

The Power is the second Channel Surfing TV pick based off of a novel. This one is written by Naomi Alderman. The story imagines a world where teenage girls suddenly develop the ability to channel electricity through their hands.

Follow young women from across the globe in places including Seattle, London, Nigeria, and Eastern Europe and watch them struggle with harnessing their powers and whether to use them for good or evil. Regardless, a new hierarchy is formed with women becoming the dominant gender.

Stream the series premiere of The Power beginning Friday, March 31, on Prime Video.
