‘Stargirl: The Lost Children’ #5 review

The Lost Children have discovered who the Buyer is – could this be their salvation?

Stargirl: The Lost Children #5 is here, packed with some action and adventure. Our main heroes, Stargirl and Red Arrow, have separated, but have formed groups consisting of the Lost Children. They now storm the castle to stop the Childminder and the Buyer. I enjoyed the twist from the last issue as we discovered who the Buyer is. Will Stargirl be able to rally the troops and bring these missing heroes back to the main timeline?

Todd Nauck and Matt Herms get to go wild with this issue, delivering many poster-worthy pages. Todd shows many action and group shots with many of the Lost Children; as a bonus, we get more characters from the past. I can’t wait to see what happens with the re-discovered Sparky and the Whiz Kid sidekicks to the Golden Age versions of Blue Beetle and Mr. Scarlet, respectively. While the cast is continuously growing, Geoff Johns does a great job of giving characters some fantastic moments.

My favorite moment of this issue was the release of Daniel Dunbar, Dyna-Mite. TNT and Dyna-Mite have been in DC stories in many different ways; in Elseworlds, Dan was the villain in the Golden Age, and in Post-Crisis, he was a member of Old Justice. The character has been tossed in as filler or put out to pasture, but the moment he receives here when Red Arrow rescues him is terrific. The entire creative team comes together to make magic when Dan has tears running down his eyes as he says, “you…know who I am?” Such a beautiful moment for the character getting his due.

We don’t get many answers in this issue, and I still have quite a few questions, especially considering the reveal that the Matthew Tyler version of Hourman is the Buyer. The cliffhanger ending implies that Hourman will save the children, but you have to wonder why he would be working with the Child Minder. Plus, one of the last times we saw this version of Hourman was back in JSA #66, where he switched places with another Hourman and was fated to die in that battle. I appreciate that use of the character as it ties back in with Geoff Johns’ previous stories and makes for a richer connection to the past as he builds up this New Golden Age.

Stargirl: The Lost Children #5 is a significant issue where Geoff Johns, Todd Nauck, and Matt Herms come together to get Stargirl and the Lost Children fighting back against the Child Minder before the big conclusion. Character connections, action, and drama are waiting for you in this issue that helps build up the New Golden Age.

More Golden Age sidekicks make their returns
This is the breakout series of the New Golden Age
Like most modern comics, it is written as a part of a whole and will be more exciting when read in a trade
