Nintendo showcases The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom gameplay

Tears of the Kingdom launches May 12.

Zelda fans finally received a long-awaited gameplay demonstration today for The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. In the 13-minute video, producer Eiji Aonuma shows off Link traversing around Hyrule, the “sky islands” floating above the world, new enemies, and new abilities for Link.

Link will be able to rewind time, allowing him to ride fallen stones backwards in time to travel to the sky islands. He can also fuse together objects found in nature to create new weapons or arrows. Fusing objects isn’t just for combat, however, as the Ultrahand ability allows Link to build a makeshift raft to cross a river in the demo. With these abilities, the possibilities for creative solutions in combat and exploration will be limitless.

Check out the full demonstration below for even more Tears of the Kingdom gameplay tidbits.

But Nintendo wasn’t done after showing of Tears of the Kingdom gameplay. It also announced a new special edition Switch OLED model with a Tears of the Kingdom aesthetic. The Joy Cons are coated in green, gold, and white, and the docking station looks absolutely gorgeous. It’ll retail for $359.99, which is only ten dollars more than the standard OLED model, and launch next month on April 28. It’s available for preorder now.

The best announcement for Tears of the Kingdom is maybe the simplest of all — Aonuma stated in the beginning of the video that production of Tears of the Kingdom is finished, meaning the May 12 release seems all but locked down. The $69.99 price is locked down as well, paving the way for future Nintendo first-party games to receive a similar price tag depending on how Tears of the Kingdom performs (and it’ll sell a bonkers amount, let’s be honest).

While you wait to venture back to Hyrule, check out AIPT’s ranking of the best Zelda games and their subtitles.
