Captain America: Symbol of Truth #12 picks up the Cold War crossover event from where part 1 left off, and once again Tochi Onvebuchi and R.B. Silva hit a home run with a book that perfectly balances the emotion and action this event needs.
Sam, Steve, Misty, and Sharon make a killer team and just as they did in part 1; the team’s seamless chemistry is a real page turner. Seeing two Captain Americas fight side by side as equals is always a joy, as is the dynamic between Misty and Sharon, a team up that’s always been a delight to read but does not happen as frequently as it should. If anything, Cold War thus far has made me want to read a book starring just the four of them even outside the event.
The snowscape action is once again really cinematic in its feeling and R.B. Silva’s art makes it a really pleasant to look at cinematic event at that. His art always has a polished sheen to it that makes every book he’s on really pop. He could do the whole event and I certainly wouldn’t complain.
Onyebuchi delivers in the softer moments of the issue too, particularly with Steve who has scenes with Sharon and discussing Ian. Steve has always been protective of Sharon, particularly after her presumed death and eventual “resurrection” back in the first volume of Captain America. But his protectiveness is always sweet rather than overprotective and overbearing. Onyebuchi captures that perfectly and their scenes together, while brief, are very sweet. The scenes where Steve discusses Ian and addresses him as his son specifically are also really endearing and provide the emotional heart of this event.
Bucky’s double agent antics heat up and the entire time he’s on panel, Silva and Onyebuchi are really skilled at how they deliver the tension of the moment. Of course one of the biggest parts of this event is seeing how Bucky’s plan will play out and how the effects of it will affect him, but the cliffhanger ending with Natasha provides a great way to hit the gas on those ideas. Bucky and Natasha have always had that super spy-esque Mr & Mrs. Smith thing going on with them and that cliffhanger ending perfectly encapsulates that. It also sets up part 3 of Cold War for the exciting reveal of how Natasha fits into this story and what her role will be in regards to Bucky’s plans — will she see through the ruse and be an ally? Or will she fall for the plan just as Steve has and position herself as his antagonist?
