The biggest new video games releasing the week of 5/22/23

Check out what’s new in the world of video games this week.

Spring is the air, and the outside world beckons with warm weather and sunshine. But that’s not going to stop gamers from staying in and checking out some new video games! While The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom has drawn most everyone’s attention this month, May still has plenty of exciting new releases to play and fall in love with.

Let’s check out what video games are hitting storefronts this week.

Star Trek: Resurgence (5/23)

Platforms: PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S

From Dramatic Labs — comprised of Telltale veterans — comes Star Trek: Resurgence, a choice-based narrative adventure set on a starship. It places you at the heart of the story as your decisions as the U.S.S. RESOLUTE‘s First Officer Jara Rydek and Engineering Crewperson Carter Diaz will affect the fate of your crew. You’ll find the characters caught up in an uprising threatening an already thin peace between two alien civilizations.

After Us (5/23)

Platforms: PC, PS5, Xbox Series X/S

After Us gives players a glimpse of Earth’s future if we humans don’t get our acts together. It’s set in a post-human world taken over by corruption and asks players to, as Spirit of Life Gaia, breathe life back into the world by rescuing animal spirits. You’ll platform around a desolate earth while avoiding corrupted devourers by jumping, gliding, and skating on rails.

Cassette Beasts (5/25)

Platforms: Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S

Already out on PCCassette Beasts goes multiplat this week. Like almost all creature collectors, it takes heavy inspiration from Pokemon but adds its own original elements to stand out. Every battle is a double battle, monsters can be fused together, and you’ll battle unique bosses with varying art styles.

Planet of Lana (5/23)

Platforms: PC, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S

Planet of Lana is the debut game from Wishfully Studios. It’s a cinematic puzzle adventure game with absolutely gorgeous visuals. You’ll journey on a rescue mission across space and time, adventuring through gorgeous locations. As of right now it’s exclusively for PC and Xbox consoles, but fingers crossed it heads to PlayStation and Switch sooner rather than later.

The Lord of the Rings: Gollum

Platforms: PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S

The next The Lord of the Rings game, after the success of Shadow of Mordor and its sequel, is… a stealth game where you play as Gollum? The Lord of the Rings: Gollum places players in the role of Gollum, the Ring-loving corrupted hobbit, as he travels across Middle-earth in search of his precious. Gameplay involves sneaking past much more powerful Orcs and Elves as well as making moral choices as either Gollum or Smeagol. It’s an odd choice for a LOTR game, but one that might work if done well.

Also worth checking out: ghostpia Season One, Forspoken: In Tanta We Trust, End of Lines, Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun, and Dice Legacy on Xbox and PlayStation consoles.
