Here is everything we know about the upcoming MCU series Echo.

Marvel fans are in for a treat with the debut series of the latest Marvel hero, Echo. This upcoming Disney Plus series focuses on Maya Lopez/ Echo, who was born deaf but uses her photographic reflexes to fight and survive in the dangerous crime world of New York City. Her abilities allow her to perfectly mimic actions and movements that she sees, making her a fearsome opponent in combat.

Echo’s first appearance in the MCU was in the tv series Hawkeye where she is going after Clint Barton, who killed her father while on a grief-fueled rampage on criminals as the vigilante, Ronin. After losing her father, Lopez takes on the role of leader of the Tracksuit Mafia gang that works with Wilson Fisk/ Kingpin. In the events of Hawkeye, Lopez realizes that Fisk was the mastermind behind her father’s death and leaves the gang behind. Considering her close and complicated relationship with Daredevil, Matt Murdock and Kingpin are expected to appear in her upcoming series.

To find out more, here is everything you need to know about Marvel’s Echo!

Echo’s Origins and Superpowers

In the Marvel comics, Echo is introduced as a young girl whose father worked for the drug lord, Kingpin/ Fisk. While she was raised to be tough, she suffers a significant loss when her father is killed on Kingpin’s order. Echo was there when her father and other mafia gang members died, placing his bloody hand on her face during his final moments. That’s why her costume features a handprint on her face.

Kingpin takes her in and raises her. In the comics, Echo grows up thinking that Daredevil killed her father because of Kingpin. But later in life, she meets Matt Murdock — who she is unaware is Daredevil, and they form a close relationship. When revealing his identity, Murdock tells her that Daredevil couldn’t have killed her father because he was in elementary school when the death happened.

Due to her abilities, she becomes a skilled dancer, martial artist, and acrobat. She also has superhuman strength, weapon proficiency, lip reading skills and speaks several languages, making her a formidable opponent for anyone who goes against her. This was one of the reasons Wilson Fisk wanted to adopt her because he saw she would be helpful in the future.

The Disney+ series will be released on November 29, 2023. Unlike other Disney+ Marvel shows, all six episodes of this show will be available to watch on the same day. The news was announced simultaneously with the Loki season 2 premiere, which will retain its week-to-week schedule.

Echo Plot Details:

At the end of Hawkeye, Maya turns her back on the Tracksuit Mafia after losing her best friend, Kazi. Although Fisk was wounded, and it seemed like Maya had finished the job and killed him, it’s clear Fisk survived.

According to the official synopsis, the Disney series is an origin story following Maya Lopez, whose ruthless activities in New York catch up with her in her hometown. While trying to reconnect with her Native American roots, she has to face her past actions to have any hope of moving forward.

The series will likely pick up from where Hawkeye left off, and will feature many flashbacks from Maya’s early life. At least before she goes on a revenge spree looking for Ronin, who was ordered to kill her father. After leaving the Tracksuit gang, she tries her best to move forward from her life of crime. So obviously, her past and interactions with Kingpin will be a massive part of this show. With Daredevil: Born Again set for a spring 2024 release, this debut series is likely to set up that show’s storyline. Echo has a close relationship with Daredevil and Kingpin in the comics, so seeing how their rivalry plays out in the Marvel series will be interesting.

Echo Cast:

Maya Lopez will be played by Alaqua Cox, who made her MCU debut in Hawkeye. Cox is deaf and a leg amputee whose disability hasn’t stopped her from traveling, playing sports, or living the life she wants. Speaking to People, Cox shared that before playing Maya Lopez in Hawkeye, she had no acting experience. She only performed in one school play while in high school. However, Marvel seems to be happy with her work, so her future with the character seems bright. Her casting as a lead actor in a Marvel series has been applauded for paving the way for inclusion and being a trailblazer in representation.

Charlie Cox will return to his famous role as Matt Murdock, aka Daredevil, who made other appearances in Spider-Man: No Way Home and She-Hulk: Attorney at Law. While Daredevil is sure to bring fans to this new series, even in comics like Daredevil & Echo, Murdock, and Lopez have always had a close relationship. Another Daredevil cast member appearing is Vincent D’Onofrio as crime lord Wilson Fisk. In Hawkeye, Lopez shoots Fisk after realizing he was behind her father’s death. But this incident will follow Lopez to wherever she goes because Fisk won’t let her off the hook.

Other stars joining the show include Devery Jacobs from Reservation Dogs, who is part of Maya’s native family. Other cast members joining the show include Tantoo Cardinal, Chase Spencer, Cody Lightning, and Graham Greene. No word yet whether Hawkeye cast members like Clint Barton, played by Jeremy Renner, or Kate Bishop (Hailee Steinfeld) will appear in this spinoff.
