‘In Hell We Fight!’ #1 review

A quest to satisfy a sweet tooth for ice cream that leads to an adventure through the depths of hell.

In Hell We Fight! #1 from Image Comics is a hilarious and exciting start to a new comic series written by John Layman. Issue #1 introduces us to an interesting band of misfits as they embark on a quest to satisfy a sweet tooth for ice cream that, unbeknownst to them, is about to lead them on an adventure through the depths of underworld.

The story follows a group of already-dead characters, including a frog-phobic man, a cursed axe victim, an assassin, and the son of an arch-demon lord. When the four of them decide to steal an ice cream truck that belongs to a demon lord, they find something way more valuable than ice cream. With excellent character development and stunning artwork by Jok, this series is a must-read.

The artwork created by Jok perfectly complements the book by bringing the depths of Hell to life. The characters depicted in the illustrations are eerie and have distinct differences. For instance, Ernie can pull an unlimited number of axes out of his head to use in fights, which then regenerate in his head again.

In Hell We Fight! #1 is a perfect introduction to an adventurous story. After finishing the first issue, readers will be curious about the next destination of the characters and how their situation could get any worse, considering they are already dead. The book has great pacing and humor, and keeps you fully engaged from beginning to end.
