The saying “a picture is worth a thousand words” rings true in the new Image Comics series, Klik Klik Boom #1. The story, created by Doug Wagner, follows Sprout, a mute who captures her travels through photographs and leaves behind the Polaroids of an elderly Black man. While Sprout has never harmed anyone before, today is different as she confronts two bank accountants who are tied to a company called Minerva World Services. The connection between them sets the plot in motion, making each moment of the first issue truly awesome.

Klik Klik Boom #1 is a must-read. I have to say I’m really impressed at Doug Wagner’s ability to constantly create interesting characters with a mysterious past, like in his previous works Plastic and Vinyl. In Klik Klik Boom #1, main character Sprout is incredibly likable from the moment she appears on the panel. She’s always peeking through store windows, taking photos, and exploring the world around her with infectious wonder. If you’ve ever seen the movie Fifth Element, you’ll probably be reminded of Milla Jovovich’s character Leeloo.
The artwork in Klik Klik Boom is also fantastic. Doug Dabbs does a great job of creating detailed, realistic characters that really help to sell the story. I especially love how he’s able to convey the characters’ emotions through their facial expressions. And the colors by Matt Wilson are just perfect for the tone of the story.
Overall, Klik Klik Boom #1 is a really fun read that will leave you wanting more. The pacing is great, the storytelling is terrific, and the characters are all really engaging. I can’t wait to see where the story goes from here!
