‘Sheroes’ review: Great action and characters without a messy story

The chemistry is the highlight.

Sheroes has the type of simple premise that is perfect for an adrenaline fueled action movie. Four friends decide to take a trip to Thailand to blow off some steam. When one of them is kidnapped by a notorious drug lord, the rest of the group must fight to stay alive. They will need each of their unique skills in a battle for survival.

Female action stars have existed for a long time. The problem is they were objects to be gawked at first and bad ass heroes second. Few were given a chance to shine and even the best were relegated to straight to video fare. Thankfully, this has improved in recent years, with more women being allowed to carry big action vehicles.

Sheroes the natural evolution of what has been a glacially slow change in Hollywood. Action movies have long been filled with big action, cool set pieces, and cool characters. Every once in a while, one with a strong story will come along, but the best are able to get by without one.

Like the best action movies, there is a lot to enjoy. The Thailand setting is used to full effect and enhances the hedonistic nature of the early part of Sheroes. When the pace picks up, the lack of urban sprawl seen in similar movies is refreshing. There are also some great fight scenes that keep things moving.

But it is the chemistry that stands out most in Sheroes. Sasha Luss (Anna), Isabelle Fuhrman (Orphan: First Kill), Wallis Day (Batwoman), and Skai Jackson (G.I. Joe: Retaliation) make for an entertaining group whose camaraderie is felt through the screen. It is this sense of loyalty that carries the film through its rougher moments.

The weakest part of Sheroes is the plot. While the friendship between the four is portrayed well, a love story towards the end feels tacked on. There are also plenty of convenient plot devices that keep things going. This is not uncommon in the genre, but the suspension of disbelief needed to fully enjoy this goes well beyond what is normally expected.

Still, there is a lot of fun to be had. The “just turn off your brain and enjoy it” cinema that is out there is usually not done intentionally. And even the ones that are just supposed to be entertaining fluff usually do not work. Sheroes is a flawed and fast paced fun; just like an action movie should be.

Sheroes is available in select theaters and on digital
