Channel Surfing: Awesome TV picks for the week of 07/31/2023

Our Channel Surfing TV picks explore teen drama and love and an NBA dynasty.

Prepare yourself for another batch of our Channel Surfing TV picks. It’s time to say goodbye when Reservation Dogs begins its final season. Love is in the air especially with a school trip to Paris on the horizon in a new season oft Heartstopper. Then, let’s go back to the 80s for more basketball drama on and off the court in Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty.

The Return of the Rez Dogs

Reservation Dogs follows a group of four teenage friends trying to make it through the day while also grieving for a lost friend. When we last left the series, they left their reservation and road tripped to California in order to find closure to their loss, and also reconcile over their own personal dramas.

Season three finds the young teens returning home and facing the consequences of running away. They all seem ready to move on and plan for their future. Meanwhile, the previous generation composed of their parents, aunts, and uncles need to do healing of their own from their past traumas.

The two-episode season three premiere of Reservation Dogs is Wednesday, August 2, on FX on Hulu.

Teenage Love

Though the main characters were featured in a novella from Alice Oseman, Heartstopper didn’t receive its start until she created the webcomic and graphic novel series of the same name. It was then adapted into a Netflix live-action series.

The series follows the relationship between Nick and Charlie, a pair of students who meet when they are seated next to each other in class. Though Charlie is out of the closet, Nick is still hesitant to reveal that side of him to the world. The new season explores their new romance while also diving into the relationships of their group of friends. Tara and Darcy experience some unforeseen problems while Tao and Elle look if there is more between them than friendship.

Stream the entire second season of Heartstopper beginning Thursday, August 3, on Netflix.

Showtime and Magic

The Los Angeles Lakers could arguably be the NBA team of the 80s winning five titles that decade. It wasn’t just the winning but how they did it, with a showmanship fitting for an organization so close to Hollywood. Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty captured Earvin “Magic” Johnson’s first year at the club and the first championship with him at the helm. Though it wasn’t always historically accurate, it did make for good TV.

Season two looks to cover the years 1980 to 1984 that included a lot of heartbreak with an early exit and crushing defeats. None as deflating than the one to their rivals, the Boston Celtics. Not only was there bad blood between the teams, but the matchup between Magic and Larry Bird would help define the NBA in the era.

The season two premiere of Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty airs Sunday, August 6, on HBO.
