Channel Surfing: Awesome TV picks for the week of 08/07/2023

We have a trio of comic related series for our Channel Surfing TV picks this week.

This piece was written during the 2023 WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes. Without the labor of the writers and actors currently on strike, the work being covered here wouldn’t exist.

We have a trio of comic related series for our Channel Surfing TV picks this week. Kang Full brings his take on the superhero genre to the small screen in Moving. Prepare for insightful takes on aspects of everyday life including life, love, and friendship in Strange Planet. Then takeoff with a group of young teens tasked with protecting the planet in Mech Cadets.

Hunting the Extraordinary

Kang Full is the creator of the popular webtoon, Moving. Now, there is an upcoming series that he helped bring to life to the small screen. Kang wrote the screenplay so you know the show will try to match his vision.

The story follows three teenagers, who are the children of government secret agents who possess superpowers. The second generation inherited abilities of their own, but try to live regular lives as not to attract unwanted attention. When a mysterious stranger begins murdering enhanced people, the teenagers must stop the assassin before he uncovers their secrets.

The first seven episodes of Moving will be released Wednesday, August 9, on Hulu.

Our Wonderful Peculiar World

Strange Planet also received its start as a webcomic. Nathan W. Pyle took his own observations about life on Earth and added a whimsical and humorous spin using little cute blue beings. It’s come a long way from short posts on Instagram to a graphic novel to a television show.

Pyle has collaborated with Dan Harmon of Community fame to help adapt Strange Planet for TV. Harmon serves as the co-creator and an executive producer of the series. It stars Tunde Adebimpe, Demi Adejuyigbe, Lori Tan Chinn, and Danny Pudi.

The three-episode series premiere of Strange Planet will release Wednesday, August 9, on Apple TV+.

The Selected Few

Mech Cadet Yu is a Ringo Award winning limited series from Boom! Studios by creators Greg Pak and Takeshi Miyazawa. It is set to return for its next chapter this week under the rebranded name Mech Cadets. That name change is to coincide with the new animated series of the same name that also premieres this week.

The story follows a group of teens who are hand picked to serve as humanity’s defense against an invading alien race. These Cadets don’t do it alone as they bond with giant Robo Mechs from outer space. When an outcast son of a janitor finds and bonds with a Robo Mech of his own, he is also thrust into training to help confront the cosmic threat.

Stream Mech Cadets beginning Thursday, August 10, on Netflix.
