The biggest new video games releasing the week of 8/28/23

Check out what’s new in the world of video games this week.

The Summer of Gaming gave us plenty of excellent video games to look forward to this year and next, but let’s not forget about the games you’ll be playing sooner rather than later. While The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom has drawn most everyone’s attention this year, this summer still has plenty of exciting new releases to play and fall in love with.

Let’s check out what video games are hitting storefronts this week.

Bomb Rush Cyberfunk (9/1)

Platforms: PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S

After taking the video game world by storm with its PC and Switch release earlier this month, Bomb Rush Cyberfunk releases on PlayStation and Xbox consoles this week. Working somewhat as a spiritual successor to 2000’s Jet Set RadioCyberfunk has players skating, performing tricks, painting graffiti, and battling rival crews in a city that acts as a giant skatepark. Hideki Naganuma, composer of Jet Set Radio, returns for Bomb Rush Cyberfunk as the music and beats are just as important to the game as its gameplay.

Goodbye Volcano High (8/29)

Platforms: PC, PlayStation 4, and PlayStation 5

Originally announced alongside the PlayStation 5 three years ago, Goodbye Volcano High finally sees the light of day. Goodbye Volcano High is a visual novel following Fang and their bandmates as they go about their senior year with an extinction-bringing asteroid hanging over everything they do. It’ll also feature rhythm-based minigames to allow the player to take part in the band’s music.

Sea of Stars (8/29)

Platforms: Nintendo Switch, PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S

Sea of Stars is the latest pixel-art RPG that takes inspiration from classics like Chrono Trigger. It follows two heroes, one with the powers of the sun and the other the moon. Together, only they can defeat the big bad. It’ll feature music composed by Yasunori Mitsuda, who scored Chrono Trigger as well as many other JRPGs. If you’re not sure yet if you want to fully dive in, don’t fret– a Sea of Stars free demo is available to give you a taste of the full game.

Also worth checking out: Under the Waves, Mario + Rabbids Sparks of Hope: Rayman in the Phantom Show, Tenebris Pictura, and Somerville on Ps4 and PS5.
