Channel Surfing: Awesome TV picks for the week of 08/28/2023

Our Channel Surfing TV picks include a pair of animated series and a live-action manga adaptation.

This piece was written during the 2023 WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes. Without the labor of the writers and actors currently on strike, the work being covered here wouldn’t exist.

This week, our Channel Surfing TV picks welcomes a new series while also preparing to say goodbye to two others. The International Secret Intelligence Service sets out on their final missions in the fourteenth season of Archer. One Piece is receiving a new live-action adaptation. Then, the fate of Dreamland is up for grabs in Disenchantment part five.

The Evolving Spy Game

The many adventures of Sterling Archer and company during their run has taken them all over from 1940s Los Angeles to South American jungles to the islands in the Pacific. Now the crew is almost ready to settle down after one more season.

When we last left off, the group rid themselves of the influential spy conglomerate known as the International Intelligence Agency. Lana is chosen to lead the International Secret Intelligence Agency and she has a new vision. This time around, she wants to get paid while they are out making the world a better place. We’ll see if the change at the top will lead to anything different.

The season 14 premiere of Archer airs Wednesday, August 30, on FXX.

A Pirate’s Life for Me

One Piece is a popular ongoing manga series that first began in 1997. It was adapted into an anime that has been running almost as long when it first aired in 1999. After all these years, the series is now receiving the live-action treatment.

The story centers on Monkey D. Luffy, a pirate captain who has stretchy abilities after consuming a mysterious Devil Fruit. He leads a ragtag crew known as the Straw Hat Pirates and together they sail the world to find the ultimate treasure that Luffy hopes will grant him the title of King of the Pirates. It’s a perilous journey since they aren’t the only ones searching for the One Piece.

Stream the entire first season of One Piece beginning Thursday, August 31, on Netflix.

Daughter Versus Mother

When we last left Disenchantment, Queen Dagmar took the throne of Dreamland alongside Satan. Bean is pushed into the ocean, but luckily is saved by a mermaid. Bean is ready for round two against her mom and hopefully the outcome will be different.

In the thrilling conclusion, Bean must defeat her mother in order to save Dreamland, but also risks fulfilling a prophecy where she will kill the one she loves most. Get ready for an epic battle to prevent the end of the world.

Disenchantment part five drops Friday, September 1, on Netflix.
