Strange and Fantastic Tales of the 20th Century is a look back at the weirdest, most memorable, and most off center movies of the 20th century. From head turning horror to oddball science fiction, this column examines the films that will leave a lasting impression for centuries to come.
Imagine you’re a lawyer cruising along with your main squeeze, but your happiness is cut short by a tragic accident. Your girlfriend is dead and while you lay on the medical examiner’s table, you wake up from death and turn into a killing machine. These are the events that kick off this week’s strange and fantastic tale, Doom Asylum.
Directed by Richard Friedman, this 1988 comedy horror features Kristin Davis (Sex and the City, And Just Like That) and Patty Mullen (Frankenhooker) as part of a group of teens that camp near the abandoned asylum that has turned into a hunting ground for Mitch Hansen, the undead lawyer.
The humor in Doom Asylum is wild. Patty Mullen plays a dual role, Judy LaRue, Mitch Hansen’s dead girlfriend, and Kiki, the daughter Judy left behind. Judy’s character misses her mother and her boyfriend Mike (William Hay) tries to comfort her by saying “I’m not your mother, I never could be, but I can try.”
This leads to a back and forth between the couple where she earnestly calls him mom and odd incest jokes ensue. Laughs and more targets for Mitch Hansen come in the form of Tina and the Tots, a tough all girl punk rock group looking to bang out some tunes in the asylum. Tina is played by Ruth Collins who comes forward as one of the film’s leading heroes.
Deranged humor, and plenty of blood and gore make Doom Asylum an instant favorite in your TUBI watchlist. Hang out with your mom and check out Doom Asylum.
