The biggest new video games releasing the week of 9/04/23

Check out what’s new in the world of video games this week.

The Summer of Gaming has come to an end, but no matter! Fall is always a wonderful time for new video games, and this season sees potential Game of the Year contenders come out week after week. Sandwiched between them are plenty of indie games to ensure it’ll be impossible for you to not find an exciting new release to play and fall in love with.

Let’s check out what video games are hitting storefronts this week.

Baldur’s Gate 3 (9/6)

Platform: PS5

Baldur’s Gate 3, already one of 2023’s best games, comes to the PlayStation 5 on Wednesday. It’s been a bit of a buggy ride so far for the game on PC, with players encountering performance issues and bugs in the later stages of the game, but at least the PS5 version will come after developer Larian Studios has already released several hotfixes and a couple chunky patches. The fact that so many people are playing and absolutely loving the D&D video game despite its performance troubles is a testament to how fun and full of freedom it is. If you don’t think you’ll be willing to wait, you can download get the $79.99 edition now, which allowed players to begin their journey to the Forgotten Realms on Saturday.

NBA 2K24 (9/8)

Platforms: Nintendo Switch, PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S

What NBA 2K11 and 2K23 did for Michael Jordan, 2K24 does for the late Kobe Bryant. Featuring the Mamba Moments mode, players will recreate some of the most pivotal and memorable moments from Bryant’s career. The eras for MyNBA (franchise mode, essentially) return in 2K24 with the addition of the LeBron Era, allowing you to rewrite the NBA from when the Heatles joined forces. Of course, NBA 2K24 will feature top-of-the-line graphics and gameplay as well as microtransaction-heavy game modes like MyCAREER.

Starfield (9/6)

Platforms: PC and Xbox Series X/S

Skyrim in space” fully launches this week. Like with Baldur’s Gate 3, plenty of players are already enjoying the game due to purchasing the $99.99 premium edition. It’ll take you out among the vastness of space as you explore star systems and the 1,000+ worlds you can land on. What you’ll be doing exactly on those worlds has become a point of contention for reviewers, as some argue Starfield goes for more of a breadth over depth approach. However, the main storyline, which sees you investigating ancient and mysterious artifacts, has been called Bethesda’s best. If you don’t care about the main quest, Starfield will still let you live out your space traveler dreams, whether as a pirate, marine, or explorer.

Also worth checking out: Chants of Sennaar, Fae Farm, and Final Fantasy VII: Ever Crisis.
