‘The Wheel of Time’ season 2 episode 4 review: ‘Daughter of the Night’

Blood calls blood.

This piece was written during the 2023 WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes. Without the labor of the writers and actors currently on strike, the work being covered here wouldn’t exist.

The story of The Wheel of Time so far: The friends from Emond’s Field are separated and trying to figure out their new places in the world. While training in the White Tower, Nynaeve begins to attract the interest of Liandrin. For her part, the Red Ajah Sister has been willing to open up to the former Wisdom. Perrin is on a hunt for the Horn of Valere while Mat is held captive. Rand remains in hiding with a mysterious new friend while Moraine makes a drastic decision. All the while, friends of the Dark One are consolidating their power.

Misdirection has been a huge part of The Wheel of Time its entire run. From the infighting amongst the protagonists to the mysterious motivations of just about every other character, distrust fills every episode. “Daughter of the Night” is filled with suspense as each of the main characters learn surprising secrets about themselves and those closest to them.

Liandrin has been a big part of season two, with the most recent episodes shedding more light on her background. Her stares are filled with malice and her words drip with venom, but there are layers that make her one of the highlights of The Wheel of Time. Her attempts to get into Nynaeve’s good graces may be bearing fruit. When a Warder playfully tells the newly raised Accepted to choose any Ajah but Red, he is met with an icy stare.

In an episode that has more shocking moments than emotional ones, Perrin’s scenes are welcome. He is learning more about himself, and seems to be more accepting of the changes. There are still plenty of questions, but it is good to have the warmhearted moments in an otherwise dark episode.

'The Wheel of Time' season 2 episode 4 review: 'Daughter of the Night'

There is a lot of blood spilled – including a gruesome opening and a powerful ending. Even getting away from the violence, “Daughter of the Night” is ominous. The heroes always seem to be one step behind. They are constantly reacting to events. Unlike poorly written supposed saviors that are seen as dim witted or uninteresting, they seem ill prepared against a powerful force.

The new season of The Wheel of Time has done an excellent job of creating a riveting story. It can be difficult to keep up with everything that is going on, but the show never loses sight of the most important themes. The danger seems ever present with friendship and trust being the most important pillars.

The Wheel of Time airs on Prime Video with new episodes every Friday
