The popularity of werewolves does not seem as tied to horror as other popular monsters. They are funny, friendly, and even cuddly, but their most frightening side is not seen as often. This is not necessarily a bad thing, but it is surprising considering how tragic the characters tend to be. Shaky Shivers is the latest comedic werewolf movie. Lucy (Brooke Markham) is convinced she has become a werewolf. Along with her friend Karen (VyVy Nguyen), the two become a part of an adventure that includes curses, cults, and Dungeons & Dragons.
How much a person enjoys Shaky Shivers will depend almost entirely on how much they like the leads. Aside from their friend Eric (Jimmy Bellinger) who does not get enough screen time and an awesome cameo at the end, almost the whole time is spent with the two friends. They have loud personalities – often literally. Between the crying and screaming, there is not much else for the pair to do.
When they are not being over the top, Lucy and Karen are being snarky. It is noticeable that there is so little depth when Shaky Shivers seems to be trying to tell a more character driven story. That being said, this is a very silly movie and the performances fit perfectly with the story being told. Markham is the standout here as she delivers a number of great one liners and carries the film when it loses its way.
Shaky Shivers is light on transformation scenes, but does not lack for great creature effects. In particular, there is a nasty looking zombies that are fantastic. Gore hounds will find a lot to appreciate, also. The bumbling misadventures may not be everyone’s cup of tea, but it is an overall enjoyable watch.
Shaky Shivers comes to theaters September 21
