Minerva World Wide Services has been a thorn in Sprout’s life since she was a little girl. They killed her father, tried to kill her newfound friend Serena, and even her pet rabbit Beatrix. But it all comes down to this issue, where Sprout comes face to face with the man who put the hit on her dad. Klik Klik Boom #5 is a kick-ass good time that satisfies and brings the ruckus like only writer Doug Wagner and artist Doug Dabbs know how.
Klik Klik Boom has been an incredible journey since we first met protagonist Sprout. Sprout is funny, charismatic, and can probably cut your head off with a paper clip if you give her enough time. But the compelling story of a family that has resonated since the first issue has made Klik Klik Boom as a series so fun to follow. Not all family has to be blood-related, and as Sprout goes through her trials and tribulations with each issue, she and Serena form a common bond that makes for a great story.
Besides that, Klik Klik Boom #5 has everything you could want in a finale book: closure, action, and an ending that will make most readers happy. Is this the last time we’ll see Sprout, Serena, and Beatrix? No one knows for sure besides the creators, but if so, it’s a satisfying end to a great series.
Issue #5 is highly driven through emotion, and as always, illustrator Doug Dabbs steps up to the challenge and brings out the best in each character. Whether it’s Sprout finding out a jaw-dropping secret about her past or Mr. Harring, to the story villain delivering a typical villain monologue and Sprout standing in front of him, the raw emotion of each character is fleshed out perfectly. My favorite part of the book is a montage of flashbacks Sprout has that motivate her to continue her pursuit of Mr. Harrington. Matt Wilson’s blend of bright and detailed colors helps sell the imagery well and helps pack a punch when the action starts.
The final issue of Klik Klik Boom is a whirlwind of juicy comic goodness, and I hope we get another installment in the future. This is easily a contender for one of the best comics of 2023, and I hope becomes a film or even a television series. Hats off to the creative team. And if that wasn’t enough, there’s an awesome Walking Dead cover that Doug Dabbs did as part of The Walking Dead’s 20th anniversary featuring Sprout and Michonne. Be sure to grab yourself a copy.
