Channel Surfing: Awesome TV picks for the week of 10/23/2023

Our Channel Surfing TV picks include a European series, an anime, and a holiday special.

With so much on television right now, our Channel Surfing TV picks highlights some shows you might want to catch this week. Evil forces are still trying to end the world in the new season of 30 Coins. Naoki Urasawa and Takashi Nagasaki’s award-winning manga series Pluto is adapted for the small screen. Then, American Horror Stories has a new special just in time to celebrate Huluween.

The Devil’s Fears

In the first season of 30 Coins, Father Manuel Vergara prevents the apocalyptic plans of a group of satanists that sought the original 30 pieces of silver used to pay Judas to betray Jesus. Now, an even greater threat is out there and Father Vergara isn’t letting being stuck in hell prevent even more heroics.

Vergara’s allies have also hit hard times. Elena is unconscious in a Madrid hospital while Paco attempts to nurse her back to health. His spurned wife, Merche, is out for revenge and is powered by one of the 30 coins. However the real danger is Paul Giamatti’s Christian Barbrow, who is so wicked, that even the devil fears him.

Season two of 30 Coins premiers today, October 23, on Max.

An International Robot Thriller

The manga series Pluto has experienced both commercial and critical success. The work from Naoki Urasawa and Takashi Nagasaki has sold over 8.5 million volumes and has earned many prestigious recognitions and awards. Because of its literary success, some thought it would be a good idea to adapt it into an anime show.

The story itself is based on Osamu Tezuka’s Astro Boy “The Greatest Robot on Earth” arc. In a world where robots and humans coexist peacefully, a string of murders occur throughout the world. The targets are the seven great robots of the world and high-profile humans fighting for robot equal rights. The robotic Europol investigator Gesicht tries to solve the mystery but is taken aback when all the clues indicate no human was involved.

Stream the entire first season of Pluto beginning Thursday, October 26, on Netflix.

Happy Huluween

To get into the Halloween spirit, Hulu has assembled a variety of scary shows and movies that you can stream on their platform. Part of the programming is a seasonal special of the anthology series, American Horror Stories.

Instead of receiving a new episode each week, we can enjoy four in one drop. They cover a variety of topics from seeking connection online after loss to artificial intelligence to the extremes we take to maintain are beauty. Of course, there will be some dark twist.

Watch the American Horror Stories Huluween event starting Thursday, October 26, on Hulu.
