#4: Nights #2

Fantastic Five: The best comics of the week of November 8, 2023

Maybe you’re like me and you’ll have a slightly muted experience of issue #2. It doesn’t instantly wow us like the first, but it proved more than effective in that unenviable task of building what’s next from all that energy and hype. Factor that in, and the issue feels just as robust and victorious, a way to focus all that buzz into a multifaceted tale of love and friendship, the ever-changing world, and what lies beneath that which we can’t fully see. If you’re not buzzed about what’s still to come, then maybe figure out where you misplaced your childlike joy and wonder. Nights continues to be a profound book that you must experience firsthand.

#3: Shazam! #5

Fantastic Five: The best comics of the week of November 8, 2023

Shazam! #5 shines bright as ever as Meet the Captain sprints towards an explosive finale. It has comedy that never detracts from the narrative carrying a lot of weight, striking imagery that serves as a reminder that the Captain is up there with Superman in terms of scale, a confidently executed twist to keep us coming back for more, and character portrayals both menacing and whimsical to keep us thoroughly engaged. If it hadn’t already been up to now, this issue certainly proves that the run is a labor of love for everyone involved, and that wherever it goes will define Billy Batson and the Shazamily for daring new age.

#2: Fire & Ice: Welcome to Smallville #3

Fantastic Five: The best comics of the week of November 8, 2023

As expressed in the last two reviews, Starer, Bustos, and Bonvillan show a strong understanding and love of these characters and their stories and that love is highlighted in every single page. I believe this book to be a spotlight title of the year and they continue to fulfill my beliefs in their talents and abilities to craft a love-letter to comic books and the uncontrollable chaos that was the 1980s. I can’t wait for the next installment.

#1: Transformers #2

Fantastic Five: The best comics of the week of November 8, 2023

Man, what a book. I’m just so excited for the future of this comic, and for what Johnson does with Transformers. I’m already impatient for the next issue, and I get to read these friggin’ things early. A strong second outing that proves that this new take on Transformers isn’t just a flash in the pan fad, it’s a legitimate take made of sterner stuff.
