Our Channel Surfing TV picks include the interesting mix of mystery, kaiju, and romance. A retreat takes a dark turn in A Murder at the End of the World. The MonsterVerse has its first live-action series with Monarch: Legacy of Monsters. Then, a beloved Bryan Lee O’Malley comic series gets animated in Scott Pilgrim Takes Off.

To Catch a Killer

A Murder at the End of the World finds a young tech savvy amateur sleuth named Darby Hart attending an exclusive retreat. It is in a remote but picturesque location hosted by a mysterious billionaire. When one of the attendees is found dead, Darby uses her investigative skills to determine if the guest was murdered, and to try to stop the killer before they find another victim.

The series is co-created by Brit Marling and Zal Batmanglij who might be best known for their previous show, The OA. The cast includes Emma Corrin, Clive Owen, Harris Dickinson, Brit Marling, Alice Braga, Joan Chen, Raúl Esparza, Jermaine Fowler, Ryan J. Haddad, Pegah Ferydoni, Javed Khan, Louis Cancelmi, Edoardo Ballerini, Britian Seibert, Christopher Gurr, Kellan Tetlow, Daniel Olson, and Neal Huff.

Stream the series premiere of A Murder at the End of the World beginning Tuesday, November 14, on FX on Hulu.

Monsters Among Us

Legendary Pictures is creating its own shared universe and they are thinking big as it all comes together. That’s because it involves such pop culture heavy weights such as Godzilla and King Kong. Their latest installment is their first foray into live-action television.

Monarch: Legacy of Monsters follows two siblings as they discover their family’s ties to the shadow organization known as Monarch. The key to piecing everything together and learning the whole story is an army officer named Lee Shaw. The story spans three generations as we watch the origins of Monarch and how their actions influenced the present. Prepare for sightings of Massive Unidentified Terrestrial Organisms, maybe even of a famous giant amphibious reptile.

The series premiere of Monarch Legacy of Monsters will be made available beginning Friday, November 17, on Apple TV+.

Fighting for the Girl of Your Dreams

Bryan Lee O’Malley’s Scott Pilgrim graphic novel series was adapted into a film back in 2010. Scott Pilgrim vs. the World finds the titular character falling for Ramona Flowers. However, in order to date her, Scott must defeat her seven evil exes.

The main cast from the movie are returning to voice their characters in the animated Scott Pilgrim Takes Off. O’Malley serves as the showrunner and he wrote the series with BenDavid Grabinski. The new story is an updated version of the original. Because of the longer form storytelling compared to a movie, O’Malley and Grabinski can dive deeper into the backstories of the characters, especially the evil exes.

Watch the entire first season of Scott Pilgrim Takes Off starting Friday, November 17, on Netflix.
