‘Justice League vs. Godzilla vs. Kong’ #2 review

Superman vs. Godzilla, who ya got?

Sometimes, mashups of characters in comics make sense, and Justice League vs. Godzilla vs. Kong brings it. Not only has writer Brian Buccellato made sense of having DC’s superheroes fighting Godzilla, but who else could match their might? The kaiju entering this story isn’t just Godzilla and Kong; many of the monsters, both sometimes heroic, fight. Justice League vs. Godzilla vs. Kong #2 focuses a lot on this, as Godzilla is attacking select areas of the globe, and the Justice League must split up to stop them!

The second issue of this series delivers right up front what we’ve all wanted: Superman punching Godzilla in the face. About half of this issue is devoted to Superman vs. Godzilla, and he quickly learns Godzilla is not only faster than he thought but nearly equal in a lot of his strength. Buccellato also reminds us Godzilla is very tough, and even Hawkwoman’s mace can’t do much to the beast. This issue asserts that while the Justice League may fight giant monsters weekly, they’re up against something even more formidable here.

While Superman is getting thrown through skyscrapers, the rest of the Justice League are off to other locations, trying to save the day. This issue suffers significantly from these characters getting into place, talking about the locations they must go to, and generally prepping for the fights they’ll take part in for future issues. There’s an epic double-page layout of all the monsters attacking key cities crafted well by artist Christian Duce, but eight or so pages feel decompressed to stretch this out.

Another chunk of this issue is devoted to Gotham, with Batman getting his Bat Family army in place to take out a giant bat Kaiju. Again, there’s some fluff-level melodrama going on–in this case, Red Hood isn’t taking orders–which means a little less kaiju action.

Superman versus Godzilla is prime-time entertainment, though. Once the issue is done with Batman–and he does get a rather badass action movie walk toward the reader moment–the rest of the issue is devoted to Superman trying to slow down Godzilla. The inclusion of Shazam is a nice touch, which shows he’s still a bit green with these sorts of things. There’s an epic double-page panel with Godzilla equally matching up with Superman. That’s a show-stopper.

If you want giant monster action, Justice League vs. Godzilla vs. Kong #2 delivers it big time. I could do without so many exposition scenes that slow the overall pace, but expectations are met as far as Superman and Godzilla in this issue.

Does the work to prove Godzilla is a formidable foe
Superman vs. Godzilla is everything you'd want it to be
Too many exposition scenes to set up other battles
The Red Hood bit seems entirely unnecessary
