Before the DC Universe goes deep into Beast World, we get a little closure on the events plaguing the Titans with some more mystery involved in this issue. So far, in this new series by Tom Taylor and Nicola Scott, we have seen the Church of Blood and Brother Blood reformation, a strange meteorite, the destruction of the Borneo Rainforest, and the death of Wally West. That’s a lot of spinning plates for the Titans, but Taylor is great at showing it all off. This issue will give us some closure on one plot point and deepen another.
From our preview, you can see Nightwing with Wally and Linda West on Mars in the Titans’ Trophy Room. I like that Tom Taylor picks that as a location since it gives us two things: one is letting Nicola Scott sneak in as many incredible items from the Titans’ history, and the other is a swift commentary on heroes putting all the dangerous prizes together. You’ll get a chuckle out of Nightwing’s remark. Scott plays that scene beyond what the preview shows with a Nightwing/Flash combo that shows these two heroes have worked and synced their skills.
The next big plot point to move forward is the Rainforest. The face-off at the start was great for showing how far the demolition team was willing to go and how deeply impacted Beast Boy was by this. Beast Boy’s idea to return to the Rainforest and help out is an excellent showcase of his character growth. Quite a bit has happened to him since Dark Crisis; seeing him endure that and continue to choose hope and give help is incredible. The scene after the face-off is even better as we get some Swamp Thing to come and help the Titans. One of my favorite things about Tom Taylor’s writing is his combination of characters and powers. When you see the restoration of the Rainforest, you will enjoy the “how” of it happening.
With Tom Taylor bringing in more characters, this is a fantastic way to have Nicola Scott draw the DCU. Her rendition of Swamp Thing was classic-looking while respecting the character’s modern updates. How Scott shows Levi Kamei transform into Swamp Thing is fantastic and interested me in learning more about this legacy character. Getting to read about Beast Boy and Swamp Thing’s burdens via the Green and the Red has me hoping that Gar and Levi get to bond more.
Titans #5 is a great issue that drives story and entertainment together. With the Rainforest and Flash’s Death plot points getting closure, there is one more visit to Brother Blood, and we get another exciting reveal. This situation will be exciting and can lead to some wild fallout in upcoming issues. Tom Taylor and Nicola Scott deliver as always.
