Marvel Comics has been doing several miniseries that take classic characters back to the past.. Luckily for us, we are getting more Daredevil out of this idea, and D.G. Chichester is coming back for more. More modern fans might not remember his run on Daredevil, Volume One, issues #292-332, yet there were some great gems in there that you shouldn’t miss out on. Last Rites and Fall From Grace are highly recommended story arcs. So, how does Chichester’s return hold up?
It’s even better than I thought it would! I was lucky to check out his run, and Last Rites was an absolute banger of a story. Of course, those issues from that era can be a bit trifling to read with our modern tastes and styles, but Chichester has embraced the new with the old very nicely. We get a Matt Murdock who is dark and mysterious, living a secret life as “Jack Batlin.” Now, if you go back to read some of those back issues, there will be a lot of text and angst, but here we jump back in, and the headspace is much cleaner.
While we have had a fantastic run by Chip Zdarsky and a good start with Saladin Ahmed, it is nice to return to an era that is just Daredevil on the streets of Hell’s Kitchen. No big soul plays or fates to worry about; instead, we get a man deep in his community and its happenings. As “Jack” walks the streets, we discover the characters in this era, and Chichester takes an opportunity to catch readers up to speed. It is an excellent play, a great reminder to returning readers, and a fast track for those joining. Chichester delivers a script that is inviting and intriguing for this retro return.
Netho Diaz does a beautiful job crafting a world packed with character as his rendition of people gives them life, making the streets much richer. Diaz does an exceptional job on the “Black Armor,” making it worthwhile to see it in action again; Diaz gets some great moments to show off in that department. J.P. Mayer’s inks and Andrew Dalhouse’s colors help elevate Diaz’s art, which delivers a triple threat that makes this standout as a stronger mini-series that demands your attention alongside the ongoing series.
Daredevil: Black Armor #1 is a marvelous opening issue that uses nostalgia to get readers to return with enough hype that newer fans will want to check out this throwback suit. D.G. Chichester and Netho Diaz give us the best of past and present with their modern-styled trip to a memorable era of Daredevil. If you’ve been digging old-school style with modern storytelling, like World’s Finest, then be sure to check this out.
