Writer Saladin Ahmed teams up with artist German Peralta for a big moment in every creative team’s time on Daredevil: a face-off with Bullseye. I have to hand it to the team as they play the characters very nicely against each other, and will keep you guessing throughout the issue. There is much to unpack in this issue, as it contains exciting tidbits. The creative team balances the drama expertly for Daredevil, in and out of the costume, which is excellent as they will have you guessing which side will have more to lose.
German Peralta’s art is something else in this issue. He leans into the darker aspects of Daredevil’s visuals, looking demonic and inspiring fear, working nicely with Ahmed’s script, possessions, and this legacy number, #666. The opening panel of the issue is a wild look at Daredevil’s mask, giving it an inhuman look, which helps the interrogation. Colorist Jesus Aburtov has been consistent with the series and perfectly complements Peralta’s art. The two combined create some panels that will have you surveying them; one will force a double take with Daredevil’s shadow, which had me wondering if that is part of Ahmed’s script.
Even though the cover informs us of Bullseye’s return, I like how Saladin Ahmed handles the character. Bullseye felt like Jaws in this issue; you know he will show up, but you don’t know when. So, instead of him being out there causing chaos, Bullseye was played more as an instrument of suspense. Ahmed had me wondering when Bullseye would strike, and it was suspenseful as this issue has Matt Murdock go to some locations where there could have been some significant disaster. Plus, you wonder which character could be “killed off” in this issue, but Ahmed plays it very close to the chest, as that is part of the potential cliffhanger ending.
Another possession builds the mystery of what these beings are. There is potential that they could be the seven deadly sins, but there may be a twist to their identity. The one that possessed Ben Urich was quite the nasty character, and I like that Ahmed played with them more, as it would’ve been nice to see more damage done by those possessed. The questions of who they are and why they are tormenting Matt Murdock and those closest to him are intriguing. This relaunched series has been a fun arc, but this issue pushes the excitement and mystery further.
Saladin Ahmed, German Peralta, and Jesus Aburtov create an issue that puts the Man Without Fear on the run as he deals with choices, devils, and Bullseye. The issue will fill you with suspense as you wait for the big confrontation. Awesome insights into Murdock’s mind as he deals with being a holy man who dresses as the devil but fights for the truth.
